FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT)
FBI Physical Fitness Test (2025 version)
Every HRT operator is an FBI Special Agent, so the first physical hurdle is the Special Agent Physical Fitness Test (PFT). Since November 2025 it is pull-ups, a 300 m sprint, push-ups and a 1.5-mile run, each scored from −2 to 10 points; you need at least 1 point in every event and 10 points in total. HRT selection itself, held once a year at Quantico, has no published fitness standards.

What an HRT operator earns — Quantico, Virginia (Washington-Baltimore-Arlington locality area)
HRT operators are FBI Special Agents (civilian GS-1811) and get no extra HRT allowance — FBI: no additional pay incentives for HRT. Basic pay is the 2026 OPM table L058 (annual amounts ÷ 12) plus LEAP at 25%; there is no BAH or BAS. GS-13 stops at step 8 because from step 9 the premium-pay cap ($197,200 a year) would cut LEAP. Overtime is not included. Source file: data/us/fbi-hrt.md.

Also required
- First become an FBI Special Agent: U.S. citizenship, a bachelor’s degree, qualifying professional work experience, a driver’s licence, the PFT and a security clearance. You must enter on duty before your 37th birthday (Special Agent FAQ, 2023; exceptions e.g. for preference-eligible veterans). The FBI Academy’s Basic Field Training Course lasts 18 weeks (850 hours).
- Then at least 3 years as an agent after the Academy (2 years through the Tactical Recruiting Program), management approval and relevant experience — for tactical operators, military or law-enforcement SWAT experience, close quarters battle and firearms. There is no age limit for HRT selection.
- HRT selection runs once a year, usually in spring, at Quantico — 2 weeks for tactical operators and pilots. It is followed by about 9 months of New Operator Training School (NOTS), which starts with a PT test whose standards are not published. The commitment is 4 years, including NOTS.
- Minimum — 1 point in every event (men) — FBI — Physical Fitness Test (PFT) Self-Evaluation Form (last updated May 2026); fbijobs.gov Physical Requirements, events 1–4 (2026-10-18)
- 10-point total spread evenly — 3 points per event (men) — FBI — PFT Self-Evaluation Form (May 2026), 3-point row; rule: 10 points in total, at least 1 in each event (2026-10-18)
Questions
Is 1 point per event enough?
No. The PFT needs 10 of 40 points in total and at least 1 point in each event. The minimum level shows the per-event floor; the second level is our illustration of the total — 3 points everywhere (12 points). Any combination reaching 10 with no event below 1 passes. The values shown are from the men’s scale; the women’s scale is different.
Are there fitness standards for HRT selection?
None are published. The only official description, an FBI article from 2013, says day one includes running, swimming and stair-climbing with a 55 lb vest and a 35 lb battering ram. For the Tactical Recruiting Program the FBI expects “12+ points” on the PFT, but that wording dates from the old test format.
Where do the numbers come from?
From the FBI “Physical Fitness Test (PFT) Self-Evaluation Form” (last updated May 2026) and the event pages on fbijobs.gov (read 18 October 2026); the path to HRT comes from the fbi.gov page “HRT Careers” (modified 13 October 2026).
